Description

Crawl4AI from 0.8.7 through 0.9.5 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability in the Docker API server that allows unauthenticated attackers to bypass destination checks via URL userinfo parsing differences. Attackers can set fetch_ssl_certificate=true with crafted userinfo URLs so SSLCertificate.from_url connects to internal hosts on port 443, probing reachability and leaking certificate details.

Executive Summary

Crawl4AI versions 0.8.7 to 0.9.5 have a server-side request forgery (SSRF) flaw in the Docker API server. Unauthenticated attackers can exploit URL userinfo parsing differences to bypass destination checks. By setting fetch_ssl_certificate=true with crafted userinfo URLs, they can force SSLCertificate.from_url to connect to internal hosts on port 443, allowing them to probe reachability and leak certificate details.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for outbound connections to port 443 from your Crawl4AI server, especially if the server is running versions 0.8.7 through 0.9.5. Check logs for SSLCertificate.from_url calls with fetch_ssl_certificate=true and crafted userinfo URLs. Use tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to inspect traffic for unexpected internal host connections.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to access internal systems and services that should not be exposed. They can probe internal hosts, gather sensitive certificate information, and potentially map your internal network. If your Docker API or related services are internet-facing, attackers could exploit this to bypass security controls and access restricted resources.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements. It may result in data breaches, unauthorized disclosure of personal or health information, and failure to maintain adequate security controls, potentially leading to regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Crawl4AI to a version beyond 0.9.5 where this issue is resolved. If upgrading is not possible, disable the Docker API server or restrict network access to it. Review and filter outbound traffic rules to block unauthorized connections to port 443 from the Crawl4AI server.
