Uncontrolled Recursion in MongoDB PHP Driver BSON Decoding

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-112368, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-19

Last updated on: 2026-10-19

Assigner: MongoDB, Inc.

Description

An uncontrolled recursion weakness in the BSON decoding logic of the MongoDB PHP driver may allow an unauthenticated party who can supply crafted binary document data to the decoder to exhaust the process stack. This may cause the PHP process using the driver to terminate unexpectedly, resulting in a loss of availability for that process. The condition occurs below the PHP layer and cannot be intercepted by application-level error handling.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an uncontrolled recursion weakness in the BSON decoding logic of the MongoDB PHP driver. It allows an unauthenticated attacker to supply crafted binary document data to the decoder, causing the process stack to exhaust. This leads to unexpected termination of the PHP process using the driver, resulting in a loss of availability.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring for stack exhaustion in PHP processes using the MongoDB PHP driver. Check for unexpected process terminations or high stack usage in PHP applications interfacing with MongoDB. Use system monitoring tools like 'top', 'htop', or 'ps' to observe process behavior. Enable PHP error logs to capture any stack overflow errors.

Impact Analysis

The impact includes unexpected termination of PHP processes using the MongoDB PHP driver, leading to service disruptions and downtime. This can affect applications relying on the driver for database operations, causing loss of availability for those services.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the MongoDB PHP driver to the latest patched version. If updating is not possible, restrict network access to MongoDB instances to trusted sources only. Monitor PHP processes for signs of stack exhaustion and implement rate limiting for database queries. Consider disabling the driver if not essential.
