Heap Overflow in Pillow Image Library

Description

Pillow is a Python imaging library. Prior to 13.0.0, Pillow's FlashPix JPEG-tile decoder can write decoded scanlines beyond the allocated tile buffer. FlashPix (FPX) JPEG decoding selects raw mode LA with two bytes per pixel, while an unrecognized JPEG mode can be decoded as JCS_UNKNOWN with four components, causing ImagingJpegDecode to write four-component scanlines into the two-byte tile buffer. An attacker can supply a crafted OLE2 FlashPix file to an application with the optional olefile dependency installed that opens or thumbnails untrusted input. This can corrupt heap memory and may allow arbitrary code execution. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.

CWE ID Description
CWE-122 A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc().
CWE-787 The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.

Executive Summary

Pillow is a Python imaging library. Prior to version 13.0.0, its FlashPix JPEG-tile decoder can write decoded scanlines beyond the allocated tile buffer. This happens when an unrecognized JPEG mode is decoded as four components but written to a two-byte tile buffer, corrupting heap memory and potentially allowing arbitrary code execution.

Impact Analysis

An attacker can exploit this by supplying a crafted OLE2 FlashPix file to an application using Pillow with the olefile dependency. This could corrupt memory and allow arbitrary code execution, potentially leading to system compromise or data breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations using vulnerable versions of Pillow may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Pillow to version 13.0.0 or later to address the heap corruption issue in the FlashPix JPEG-tile decoder.
