Argument Injection in Pillow via Ghostscript EPS Handling

Description

Pillow is a Python imaging library. From 2.6.0 until 13.0.0, Pillow is vulnerable to argument injection when invoking Ghostscript for EPS input. EpsImagePlugin.Ghostscript passes a caller-controlled input filename after -f without converting it to a safe absolute path, so a name beginning with a hyphen can be interpreted as a Ghostscript option. An attacker who controls the filename can inject Ghostscript arguments. Arbitrary command execution specifically requires a leading @ argument-file filename and control of the referenced text file containing additional Ghostscript arguments; the reported chain reproduces with the default -dSAFER invocation. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.

CWE ID Description
CWE-88 The product constructs a string for a command to be executed by a separate component in another control sphere, but it does not properly delimit the intended arguments, options, or switches within that command string.
CWE-78 The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

Pillow, a Python imaging library, has a vulnerability in versions 2.6.0 to 13.0.0 where it is susceptible to argument injection when processing EPS input files. The issue occurs because the library passes a user-controlled filename directly to Ghostscript without converting it to a safe absolute path. If the filename starts with a hyphen, it can be misinterpreted as a Ghostscript option, allowing an attacker to inject malicious arguments.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your system uses Pillow versions between 2.6.0 and 13.0.0. Run: pip show Pillow or python -c "import PIL; print(PIL.__version__)" to verify the installed version. If the version is within the vulnerable range, the system is potentially affected.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary commands on your system if they control the filename of an EPS file processed by Pillow. Specifically, they could craft a filename starting with a hyphen and reference a malicious argument file to inject Ghostscript commands, potentially leading to unauthorized code execution.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Pillow to version 13.0.0 or later immediately. Use pip install --upgrade Pillow or your package manager to update. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to files processed by Pillow and avoid using untrusted EPS files.
