launch-editor OS Command Injection via Malicious File Path

Description

launch-editor allows users to open files with line numbers in editor from Node.js. Prior to 2.14.2, launch-editor-middleware processes an attacker-controlled Windows file argument where the file argument ends in a parent-directory component plus a line-and-column suffix: the path is resolved while the suffix is still present, and launch-editor removes the suffix before its existsSync check, leaving the existing parent directory for existsSync and allowing the attacker-controlled file argument to pass filename existence validation without requiring the malicious filename to exist. The bypass can lead to OS command injection when combined with the separately described Windows percent-expansion flaw. This issue is fixed in version 2.14.2.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the launch-editor package on Windows systems. It allows an attacker to bypass file existence checks by crafting a path ending in a parent-directory component and a line-and-column suffix. The path is resolved incorrectly, letting the attacker pass validation without the file needing to exist. Combined with a separate Windows percent-expansion flaw, this can lead to OS command injection.

Detection Guidance

Check if your system uses vulnerable versions of launch-editor, vite, or vite-plus on Windows. Inspect package.json files for versions prior to 2.14.2. Review file paths in logs for patterns like `..:line:column` or unusual percent-encoded sequences.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can allow attackers to execute arbitrary commands on your system with the privileges of the vulnerable application. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or system compromise. The attack requires network access and no user interaction, making it dangerous if the vulnerable software is exposed.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Successful exploitation may result in data breaches, triggering mandatory breach notifications and potential fines under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update launch-editor and related packages to version 2.14.2 or later. Remove or restrict access to vulnerable endpoints handling file arguments. Monitor for suspicious file path patterns in logs.
