Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) flaw in the Media Library Assistant WordPress plugin before version 3.42. It allows an attacker to trick a logged-in user with the Editor role or higher into permanently deleting all trashed media attachments on the site by exploiting a missing CSRF nonce check for the Empty Trash media action.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the Media Library Assistant plugin in WordPress. If it is below 3.42, the system is vulnerable. Use WP-CLI with the command: wp plugin list | grep media-library-assistant to verify the version.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can cause permanent loss of all trashed media files on a WordPress site. Users with the Editor role or above could unknowingly delete critical media content, leading to data loss and potential disruption of site functionality.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with data protection regulations like GDPR or HIPAA if it results in the unauthorized deletion of sensitive media files. Permanent data loss may violate retention policies and expose organizations to legal or regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Media Library Assistant plugin to version 3.42 or later immediately. This can be done via the WordPress admin dashboard or using WP-CLI with the command: wp plugin update media-library-assistant.
