Executive Summary

This is an Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) vulnerability in the GeoDirectory WordPress plugin before version 2.8.194. It allows authenticated users with Subscriber-level access or higher to modify images linked to other users' listings without proper verification. Attackers can change titles, captions, moderation status, and featured flags of images belonging to other users, and even claim another user's image as their own featured image.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of the GeoDirectory plugin. If it is below 2.8.194, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress or inspect the plugin files for version details.

Impact Analysis

If you use the GeoDirectory plugin with a version prior to 2.8.194, an attacker with basic user access could alter your listings' images, change their descriptions, or misuse your images as their own. This could damage your site's integrity, misrepresent your content, or lead to unauthorized use of your media.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially violate compliance requirements such as GDPR or HIPAA by allowing unauthorized modifications to user-generated content or images, which may include sensitive data. Unauthorized changes to moderation status or image ownership could lead to data integrity issues and non-compliance with privacy and security standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the GeoDirectory plugin to version 2.8.194 or later. If updating is not possible, restrict user roles to prevent Subscriber-level access from modifying listings or images.
