Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a missing authorization flaw in Sharkord versions before 0.0.8. It allows any authenticated user to change server-wide settings via the others.updateSettings tRPC mutation without needing the MANAGE_SETTINGS permission. Attackers can set a join password, disable registration, remove upload limits, or disable plugin loading, potentially causing denial of service for other members.

Detection Guidance

Check Sharkord server logs for unauthorized settings changes or tRPC mutation calls to others.updateSettings without MANAGE_SETTINGS permission. Review API endpoint access logs for POST requests to /trpc/others.updateSettings from non-admin users.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to disrupt server operations by setting a join password, disabling registration, removing upload limits, or disabling plugin loading. This could prevent other members from accessing the server or using its features, leading to a denial of service.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Sharkord to version 0.0.8 or later to apply the missing permission checks. If upgrading is not possible, manually add the MANAGE_SETTINGS permission check to the updateSettings tRPC mutation handler as shown in commit 3866cd3.
