Executive Summary

Fat Free CRM before version 0.26.0 has an insecure direct object reference vulnerability. This allows authenticated users to modify or delete comments made by other users without proper authorization checks. The CommentsController#update and #destroy functions use Comment.find without scoping, enabling attackers to send PUT or DELETE requests to /comments/:id with sequential IDs to edit or delete comments on contacts, accounts, leads, and opportunities owned by others.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized modifications or deletions of comments in Fat Free CRM by monitoring PUT or DELETE requests to /comments/:id with sequential IDs. Review application logs for suspicious activity targeting contacts, accounts, leads, or opportunities.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers with authenticated access to alter or remove comments on sensitive CRM data such as contacts, accounts, leads, and opportunities. This could lead to data integrity issues, unauthorized modifications, or loss of important information, potentially disrupting business operations or causing reputational damage.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized modifications or deletions of user comments containing personal or sensitive data. GDPR requires data integrity and protection, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. Unauthorized changes could violate these regulations, leading to legal penalties or loss of compliance certifications.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Fat Free CRM to version 0.26.0 or later to address the insecure direct object reference vulnerability. Ensure proper authorization checks are implemented in CommentsController#update and #destroy actions.
