Description

ApostropheCMS is an open-source Node.js content management system. Prior to 3.7.0 of the import-export module, an authenticated importer can submit a tar entry whose normalized destination targets a directory while bypassing the literal parent-path substring guard. Opening that directory as a write stream emits an unhandled filesystem error that can terminate the Node.js process; the source establishes this static primitive but not an end-to-end exploit or controlled arbitrary file read or write. This issue is fixed in version 3.7.0.

Executive Summary

ApostropheCMS is a Node.js content management system. The vulnerability exists in the import-export module before version 3.7.0. An authenticated user can craft a tar file entry that targets a directory instead of a file. The system fails to properly validate this path, leading to an unhandled filesystem error when attempting to write to the directory. This error can crash the Node.js process.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the version of the import-export module in ApostropheCMS. Run npm list @apostrophecms/import-export to see the installed version. If it is below 3.7.0, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause denial of service by crashing the Node.js process running ApostropheCMS. If exploited repeatedly, it may disrupt the availability of the content management system, leading to downtime for websites or applications using the affected module.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade the import-export module to version 3.7.0 or later using npm update @apostrophecms/import-export. Ensure no unauthenticated users have access to the importer functionality.
