Description

ApostropheCMS is an open-source Node.js content management system. Prior to 4.33.0, the notification module exposes PATCH and DELETE REST endpoints that perform operations directly on the underlying MongoDB collection without verifying that the requester is authenticated or owns the target notification. As a result, an unauthenticated attacker who obtains a valid notification ID can modify or permanently delete another user's notification. This issue is fixed in version 4.33.0.

Executive Summary

ApostropheCMS is a Node.js content management system. Prior to version 4.33.0, its notification module had PATCH and DELETE REST endpoints that allowed direct MongoDB operations without authentication or ownership checks. An unauthenticated attacker with a valid notification ID could modify or delete another user's notifications.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your ApostropheCMS version is below 4.33.0. Inspect network traffic for unauthorized PATCH or DELETE requests to notification endpoints. Look for logs showing unauthenticated access attempts to /api/v1/notifications with valid notification IDs.

Impact Analysis

If you use ApostropheCMS versions before 4.33.0, an attacker could alter or delete your notifications without your knowledge. This could disrupt workflows, remove important alerts, or cause data loss if notifications contain critical information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance by allowing unauthorized modification or deletion of user notifications, potentially violating data integrity and access control requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. However, the specific compliance impact depends on how notifications are used in your system.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade ApostropheCMS to version 4.33.0 or later. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the notification endpoints via firewall rules or network segmentation. Monitor logs for suspicious activity targeting notification IDs.
