Description

The GeoDirectory WordPress plugin before 2.8.194 does not properly escape administrator-defined text before writing it into a generated PHP file in its own folder, allowing high privilege users such as a subsite administrator on a multisite network, who cannot otherwise run code, to achieve Remote Code Execution that any unauthenticated visitor can trigger.

Executive Summary

The GeoDirectory WordPress plugin before version 2.8.194 has a flaw where administrator-defined text is not properly escaped before being written into a generated PHP file within the plugin's folder. This allows high-privilege users, such as subsite administrators on a multisite network, to execute remote code even if they normally lack this capability.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the GeoDirectory WordPress plugin. If it is below 2.8.194, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files directly for version information.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary code on your server, potentially taking full control of your WordPress site. Since unauthenticated visitors can trigger the vulnerability, anyone with access to your site could abuse this flaw to run malicious scripts.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or data exfiltration, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the GeoDirectory plugin to version 2.8.194 or later immediately. Remove any unauthorized PHP files in the plugin directory and audit for signs of compromise. Restrict high-privilege user access until the update is applied.
