Description

Froxlor before 2.3.15 contains a symlink following vulnerability in Statistics::makeChownWithNewStats that allows authenticated customers to take ownership of arbitrary host directories by abusing the root-run traffic cron. Attackers can replace the goaccess statistics directory in their document root with a symlink, causing chown -R to hand root-owned trees to them and enabling root escalation.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-113678 is a symlink following vulnerability in Froxlor versions before 2.3.15. It exists in the Statistics::makeChownWithNewStats function and is triggered by the root-run traffic cron job. Authenticated customers can replace the goaccess statistics directory in their document root with a symlink pointing to any host directory. When the cron job runs chown -R as root, it dereferences the symlink and changes ownership of the target directory and its contents to the customer's user, enabling root-level access and control over sensitive files.

Detection Guidance

Check Froxlor version with 'froxlor --version' or via the web interface. If running version 2.0.0 to 2.3.14, the system is vulnerable. Inspect cron jobs for 'traffic' tasks running as root. Look for suspicious symlinks in customer document roots pointing outside intended directories.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers with access to a customer's document root to take ownership of arbitrary host directories. This can lead to reading sensitive files like TLS private keys, modifying configuration files, destroying data, or gaining root privileges. The attack requires only shared-hosting capabilities such as shell, FTP, or web access to the document root and does not require statistics tools like goaccess to be installed.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Froxlor to version 2.3.15 or later immediately. Disable the root-run traffic cron job if not using statistics tools. Review and remove any suspicious symlinks in customer directories. Ensure file ownership and permissions are correctly set after upgrade.
