Description

A flaw was found in the libstdc++ component of GCC. An attacker who can provide an excessively large element count to a boolean vector (std::vector<bool>) constructor can trigger an integer wrap during internal memory calculations. This issue leaves the container in an inconsistent state, leading to out-of-bounds memory access and resulting in an application crash or a Denial of Service (DoS) during subsequent operations.

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in the libstdc++ component of GCC. An attacker provides an excessively large element count to a boolean vector constructor, causing an integer wrap during memory calculations. This leaves the vector in an inconsistent state, leading to out-of-bounds memory access, application crashes, or Denial of Service (DoS) during later operations.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires detecting applications using std::vector<bool> in GCC's libstdc++. Check for crashes or DoS during vector operations. Review logs for applications using gcc-toolset-15-gcc-15.2.1-7.el10 or similar versions. Monitor for processes terminating unexpectedly after handling large boolean vectors.

Impact Analysis

The impact is limited to the affected application's execution scope. It can cause crashes or Denial of Service (DoS) when the vulnerable vector is used after initialization. Exploitation requires attacker control over near-maximum integer values during container initialization, making it difficult but possible.

Mitigation Strategies

No official patch exists yet. Red Hat rates mitigation options as unavailable or unstable. Consider isolating affected applications, restricting input sizes to vectors, or disabling vector<bool> usage in critical paths. Monitor vendor advisories for future updates.
