Executive Summary

The InstaWP Connect WordPress plugin before version 0.1.4.2 has a vulnerability where it does not check user capabilities before allowing settings updates. It only verifies a nonce, letting low-privileged authenticated users modify settings, including those controlling access to the plugin's sync feature.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the InstaWP Connect plugin. If it is below 0.1.4.2, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress or inspect the plugin directory for version details.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with a low-privileged role could change plugin settings, potentially enabling unauthorized access to the sync feature. This could lead to data leaks or unauthorized actions if the settings are altered maliciously.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data modifications, potentially violating GDPR or HIPAA requirements for access control and data integrity. Organizations using the vulnerable plugin may face compliance risks if settings are altered.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the InstaWP Connect plugin to version 0.1.4.2 or later immediately. Review and restrict low-privileged user roles to prevent unauthorized access to plugin settings.
