Executive Summary

This is a vulnerability in Oracle Java SE, GraalVM for JDK, and GraalVM Enterprise Edition affecting multiple versions. It involves the JSSE component and allows unauthenticated attackers to remotely access and compromise data integrity and confidentiality via network protocols. Exploitation can lead to unauthorized creation, deletion, or modification of critical data.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the installed Java versions and verifying if they are affected. Use commands like 'java -version' to check the version. Compare the output against the affected versions listed in the CVE. Additionally, inspect the JSSE component for any misconfigurations or unauthorized modifications.

Impact Analysis

If you use affected Oracle Java or GraalVM versions, an attacker could access sensitive data, modify or delete critical files, or gain full access to system data without authentication. This is especially risky for systems running untrusted Java code like web apps or applets.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance risks include legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update to the latest Java version or apply Oracle's recommended mitigations. Remove or disable impacted root CA certificates related to eMudhra as advised by Oracle. Ensure all Java deployments, especially those running untrusted code, are updated and properly sandboxed.
