Path Traversal in Mautic Asset API

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-115194, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-26

Last updated on: 2026-10-26

Assigner: Mautic

Description

A path traversal vulnerability exists in the Mautic Asset API. When creating a local asset through the API, the supplied file path is not restricted to the asset upload directory. An authenticated API user with permission to create assets can register any file that is readable by the web server process as a Mautic asset. When the asset is published, its public download URL serves the contents of that file without authentication. This allows the attacker to read arbitrary files from the server, including Mautic configuration files containing the database password, secret key, and mail (SMTP) credentials, as well as system files and any other file readable by the web server user. Exposed credentials can be used to access the database or other connected services, and anyone with the public asset URL can retrieve the file contents.

Executive Summary

This is a path traversal vulnerability in the Mautic Asset API. An authenticated user with asset creation permissions can register any file readable by the web server as a Mautic asset by providing an unrestricted file path. When published, the asset's public URL serves the file's contents without authentication, allowing unauthorized access to sensitive files like configuration files containing database passwords, secret keys, and mail credentials.

Detection Guidance

Check Mautic version to see if it falls within vulnerable ranges (2.3.0-5.2.11, 6.0.0-6.0.9, 7.0.0-7.2.1). Review API logs for unusual asset creation requests with suspicious file paths. Test if arbitrary files can be accessed via the public asset download URL.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can read arbitrary files on the server, including sensitive data like Mautic configuration files. Exposed credentials may allow access to the database or other services. Anyone with the public asset URL can retrieve file contents, leading to potential data breaches or further exploitation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. Exposure of personal or health data may result in regulatory fines, legal consequences, and reputational damage due to non-compliance with data protection standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Mautic to patched versions (5.2.12, 6.0.10, or 7.2.2). If upgrading is not possible, disable API access or restrict asset creation permissions to trusted users only.
