Description

The Photo Engine (Media Organizer & Lightroom) WordPress plugin before 6.6.0 does not have proper authorization checks when updating post data through one of its REST API routes in all versions up to, and including, 6.5.8. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Author-level access and above, to modify the title, content, excerpt and other fields of arbitrary posts, pages and attachments, including those belonging to other users.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-115259 is an Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) vulnerability in the Photo Engine WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with Author-level access or higher to modify post titles, content, excerpts, and other fields of arbitrary posts, pages, and attachments, including those belonging to other users. The issue stems from improper authorization checks in one of the plugin's REST API routes.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the Photo Engine plugin. If it is below 6.6.0, the system is vulnerable. Use WordPress admin panel or run: wp plugin list | grep photo-engine in the WordPress directory.

Impact Analysis

If you use the Photo Engine plugin versions up to 6.5.8, an attacker with Author-level access could alter your website content without permission. This includes changing posts, pages, or media belonging to other users, potentially leading to misinformation, defacement, or unauthorized data changes.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized modifications of sensitive data, violating integrity and confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Unauthorized changes to user data or content may result in non-compliance, potential fines, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Photo Engine plugin to version 6.6.0 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, restrict Author-level and higher user roles to prevent unauthorized modifications.
