Description

The Contact Form by Supsystic WordPress plugin before 1.11.1 does not sandbox the template engine used to render its forms and allows stored form-editor content to reach that engine as executable template code, enabling an administrator to perform server-side template injection and execute arbitrary code on the server. The injected template is compiled and executed whenever any visitor loads a page containing the form, so the stored payload also lets an unauthenticated visitor read server-side secrets such as authentication salts and database credentials.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the WordPress plugin Contact Form by Supsystic before version 1.11.1. It allows an administrator to inject executable template code into forms via the form editor. When a visitor loads a page with the compromised form, the injected code executes on the server, enabling arbitrary code execution.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Contact Form by Supsystic plugin version is below 1.11.1. Inspect form templates for suspicious executable code snippets. Review server logs for unexpected template compilation errors or code execution traces.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with administrator access could exploit this to run malicious code on your server. Visitors to your site may unknowingly trigger the code, leading to unauthorized access, data theft, or server compromise. Sensitive information like database credentials could be exposed.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Contact Form by Supsystic plugin to version 1.11.1 or later immediately. Remove or disable the plugin if updates are unavailable. Restrict administrator access to the plugin's form editor to minimize exposure.
