CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

Lotus through 0.10.2 has an SQL injection flaw where authenticated organization users can run arbitrary SQL commands by appending stacked statements to custom metric queries. Attackers exploit this by sending semicolon-separated SQL via POST /app/metrics/ to bypass validation and access or alter data across all tenants.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability in Lotus, monitor POST requests to /app/metrics/ for semicolon-separated SQL statements. Check application logs for unusual queries or errors. Use tools like SQLMap to test for injection points by sending crafted payloads with stacked statements.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to read or modify sensitive data across all tenants, potentially leading to data breaches, unauthorized access to confidential information, or manipulation of critical system data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability can lead to non-compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, and other regulations due to unauthorized data access or modification. It may result in legal penalties, loss of trust, and reputational damage for organizations handling sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Lotus to the latest version (0.10.2 or higher). Implement input validation to block semicolon-separated SQL in custom metric queries. Restrict database permissions for application users to limit data access. Monitor for suspicious activity in logs.
