Description

A flaw was found in GCC libstdc++. When an application extracts data into a bitset from a wide-character stream, internal stack memory allocation fails to properly account for character size and alignment. An attacker capable of supplying crafted input to an affected application could trigger a stack-based buffer overflow leading denial of service (DoS).

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow in GCC's libstdc++. When an application extracts wide-character data into a bitset, the internal stack memory allocation fails to account for character size and alignment. This can lead to a buffer overflow, potentially causing denial of service (DoS) or, in rare cases, arbitrary code execution.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking if your system uses GCC libstdc++ with the affected bitset stream extraction functionality. Inspect applications that process wide-character streams into bitsets. Use commands like 'rpm -q libstdc++' or 'apt list --installed | grep libstdc++' to verify library versions. Monitor for crashes in applications handling wide-character input.

Impact Analysis

The impact depends on whether your application processes untrusted wide-character input into a bitset. If so, an attacker could trigger a DoS by supplying crafted input. The risk is limited because this design pattern is uncommon in standard enterprise applications.

Mitigation Strategies

Since no official patches are available, avoid using applications that extract untrusted wide-character input into bitsets. If possible, disable such functionality in affected applications. Monitor Red Hat's Bugzilla and security advisories for updates. Consider upgrading to supported versions once fixes are released.
