Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves unbounded allocation in XML parsing in Apache Vysper, an XMPP (Jabber) server library. It may lead to an out-of-memory condition, potentially causing the application to crash or become unresponsive.

Detection Guidance

Since Apache Vysper is retired and no longer supported, detection may involve monitoring for out-of-memory errors or unusual XML parsing behavior in XMPP server logs. Check for processes consuming excessive memory or crashes during XML-heavy operations.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can cause system instability by consuming excessive memory, leading to crashes or denial-of-service conditions. Since Apache Vysper is no longer supported, there is no official fix available.

Mitigation Strategies

Migrate to an actively maintained XMPP server alternative as Apache Vysper is no longer supported and no fixes will be released. Disable or remove Apache Vysper from your network to prevent exploitation.
