Description

The Prime Mover – Backup and Migration plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to PHP Object Injection in all versions up to, and including, 2.2.1 via deserialization of untrusted input in the migration search-and-replace routine (recursiveUnserializeReplace()). An unauthenticated attacker can store a crafted, base64-encoded serialized object in wp_comments.comment_content through the standard comment-submission endpoint (wp-comments-post.php). When an administrator subsequently performs a routine Prime Mover export or restore, the plugin base64-decodes that stored value and passes it to unserialize() with no allowed_classes restriction. A Property-Oriented Programming (POP) chain is present in the plugin's own bundled Freemius library (FS_Clone_Manager::__set β†’ FS_Option_Manager::set_option β†’ store() β†’ update_option()), so no additional plugin or theme is required β€” the plugin ships the gadget itself.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a PHP Object Injection flaw in the Prime Mover WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious serialized PHP objects via WordPress comments. When an admin performs a backup or restore, the plugin decodes and deserializes the object without proper restrictions, enabling remote code execution.

Detection Guidance

Check for suspicious serialized objects in wp_comments.comment_content by querying the database for base64-encoded strings. Look for recent comments with unusual content or patterns. Review server logs for access to wp-comments-post.php from unexpected sources.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary code on your server, potentially taking full control of your WordPress site. This could lead to data theft, site defacement, or being used as a pivot point for further attacks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations may face fines or legal consequences if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Prime Mover plugin to the latest version beyond 2.2.1. Temporarily disable the plugin if an update is unavailable. Restrict write access to wp_comments.comment_content and monitor for unauthorized changes.
