Description

The User Profile Builder – Beautiful User Registration Forms, User Profiles & User Role Editor plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Limited Privilege Escalation in all versions up to, and including, 4.0.3. This is due to the Gutenberg Register block passing the attacker-controlled Assigned Role attribute directly into the `[wppb-register]` shortcode without server-side authorization. The role guard in the form builder only downgrades roles that carry the manage_options or remove_users capability, leaving the Editor role and other privileged non-Administrator roles completely unrestricted. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers with Author-level access and above to create new WordPress accounts bearing the Editor role (or any other role that lacks the two guarded capabilities).

Executive Summary

This WordPress plugin vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with Author-level access or higher to escalate their privileges to Editor or other roles. The issue occurs because the plugin passes user-controlled role attributes directly into a shortcode without proper server-side checks, bypassing role restrictions for non-Administrator roles.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the User Profile Builder plugin for versions up to 4.0.3. Inspect shortcode usage in posts/pages for [wppb-register] with role parameters. Review user accounts for unexpected Editor role assignments or unauthorized role changes.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could create new WordPress accounts with elevated privileges like Editor, allowing them to modify content, access restricted areas, or perform administrative actions depending on the compromised role. This could lead to unauthorized content changes, data theft, or further system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements by enabling unauthorized privilege escalation, potentially leading to unauthorized access to sensitive data. Organizations may face penalties for failing to protect user data under regulations like GDPR or HIPAA if this flaw is exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the User Profile Builder plugin to the latest version. Remove or restrict [wppb-register] shortcode usage. Audit user roles and remove unauthorized Editor role assignments. Implement additional role validation checks.
