Description

The NewsmanApp plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'billing_first_name, billing_last_name' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.7.29 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This vulnerability is only exploitable when the Newsman Remarketing feature is enabled and a non-empty Remarketing ID is configured in the plugin settings.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the NewsmanApp WordPress plugin up to version 3.7.29. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the billing_first_name and billing_last_name parameters due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The attack is only possible if the Newsman Remarketing feature is enabled and a Remarketing ID is configured.

Detection Guidance

Check if the NewsmanApp plugin version is 3.7.29 or lower. Inspect WordPress admin pages for the Newsman Remarketing feature and verify if a non-empty Remarketing ID is configured. Look for suspicious JavaScript injections in pages generated by the plugin.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could inject malicious scripts into pages that execute when users access them. This could lead to theft of cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data. Users might be redirected to phishing sites or have their accounts compromised without realizing it.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. It may result in data breaches, leading to legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the NewsmanApp plugin to version 3.7.32 or later. Disable the Newsman Remarketing feature if not needed. Review and remove any unauthorized scripts in WordPress pages. Ensure proper input sanitization is applied to all user inputs.
