Starman HTTP Response Desynchronization on HEAD Requests

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-115823, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-25

Last updated on: 2026-10-25

Assigner: CPANSec

Description

Starman versions before 0.4019 for Perl send response bodies for HEAD requests, desynchronizing responses on keep-alive connections. For a HEAD request Starman omits chunked framing but still writes the body returned by the application, on both the array and streaming response paths. Responses with a 1xx, 204 or 304 status also carry the body. On a keep-alive or pipelined connection the client reads those bytes as the start of the next response. A front-end proxy that reuses upstream connections may then pair responses with the wrong requests.

CWE ID Description
CWE-444 The product acts as an intermediary HTTP agent (such as a proxy or firewall) in the data flow between two entities such as a client and server, but it does not interpret malformed HTTP requests or responses in ways that are consistent with how the messages will be processed by those entities that are at the ultimate destination.

Executive Summary

Starman versions before 0.4019 for Perl incorrectly include response bodies for HEAD requests and responses with 1xx, 204, or 304 status codes. This violates HTTP standards and causes desynchronization on keep-alive connections where the body bytes are misread as the start of the next response.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Starman server version is before 0.4019. Run: starman --version. If vulnerable, responses for HEAD requests or 1xx, 204, 304 status codes may include unexpected body content, causing desynchronization in keep-alive connections.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can corrupt HTTP responses in keep-alive or pipelined connections. For example, a response like 'HELLOHTTP/1.1 200 OK' may occur, leading to incorrect data being processed by clients or proxies. This can cause application errors or security issues if responses are paired with wrong requests.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Starman to version 0.4019 or later. Apply the patch from the GitHub commit 91c47c529cd1e100f938486896ea9083ec3ec7bf. Verify the fix by testing HEAD requests and 1xx, 204, 304 responses to ensure no body is included.
