Description

The VikRentCar Car Rental Management System plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'poplink' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.4.9 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The handler requires only a WordPress nonce (vikwp_nonce), which the plugin itself emits to unauthenticated visitors on the public booking-confirmation page, allowing an attacker to obtain a valid token without any account.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the VikRentCar Car Rental Management System plugin for WordPress. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'poplink' parameter due to poor input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute when users access compromised pages.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the VikRentCar Car Rental Management System plugin version 1.4.9 or lower. Check for malicious scripts in pages via the 'poplink' parameter. Use WordPress admin panel to review plugin versions and scan for unusual scripts in page content.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, redirect visitors to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. Since no authentication is required, any visitor to an infected page could be affected. The vulnerability also allows attackers to obtain valid nonces without an account.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, exposing user data and violating privacy regulations like GDPR or HIPAA. Stored XSS may result in unauthorized access to sensitive information, triggering compliance violations and potential legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the VikRentCar plugin to the latest version. If no update is available, consider disabling or removing the plugin until a patch is released. Monitor your site for suspicious activity or unauthorized script injections.
