Description

The Themify Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'variations' repeater field of Custom Font (tb_cf) posts in versions up to, and including, 7.8.4. This is due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on the variations post meta: Themify_Metabox::_save_meta() only passes the value through wp_kses_data() when the field type is 'textbox' or 'textarea', so the 'repeater' field writes attacker-controlled sub-fields (style, woff/woff2/ttf/svg/eot URLs) to update_post_meta() verbatim, and Themify_Custom_Fonts::render_columns() later echoes those values unescaped inside a <style> block on the Custom Fonts admin listing. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page (specifically, the Custom Fonts admin listing).

Executive Summary

The Themify Builder plugin for WordPress has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 7.8.4. It occurs via the 'variations' repeater field in Custom Font posts due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. Attackers with contributor-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into the 'repeater' field, which are later executed unescaped in the Custom Fonts admin listing.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized Custom Font posts with malicious variations in the Themify Builder plugin. Inspect admin pages for unexpected scripts in the Custom Fonts listing. Review database entries for tb_cf posts with unsanitized meta values.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts. When a user accesses the Custom Fonts admin listing, the injected scripts execute. This could lead to unauthorized actions, data theft, or defacement of the WordPress site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, which may violate GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (healthcare data privacy) requirements. Non-compliance risks include fines, legal action, and reputational damage due to compromised user data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Themify Builder plugin to the latest version (7.8.5 or higher). Remove any suspicious Custom Font posts with malicious variations. Implement strict input validation for user-generated content.
