Integer Overflow in open62541 OPC UA Client Library

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-116014, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

open62541 1.5.0 before 1.5.7 contains an integer overflow in UA_DataType_fromStructureDescription() that wraps the 16-bit memSize field for large custom structure definitions. A malicious OPC UA server can supply DataType definitions via UA_Client_getRemoteDataTypes(), causing decodeBinaryStructure() to overflow the heap, crashing clients or enabling code execution.

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an integer overflow in the open62541 library (versions 1.5.0 to 1.5.6) that occurs when processing custom DataType definitions. A malicious OPC UA server can send oversized structure definitions that cause the 16-bit memSize field to wrap around, leading to heap buffer overflows during decoding. This can crash clients or potentially allow code execution.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the open62541 library version on your system. Run: open62541 --version or check the installed package version via your package manager. If the version is 1.5.0 through 1.5.6, the system is vulnerable. Monitor OPC UA server responses for malformed DataType definitions that may trigger crashes or memory corruption.

Impact Analysis

If you use open62541 versions 1.5.0 to 1.5.6 in an OPC UA client or server, a malicious server could exploit this to crash your application or execute arbitrary code. This could disrupt operations, cause data corruption, or allow unauthorized access to systems relying on OPC UA communication.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access, system disruption, or data breaches, which may violate GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (healthcare data privacy) requirements. Organizations using vulnerable versions must patch to avoid compliance violations and potential legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade open62541 to version 1.5.7 or later immediately. The patched version includes validation to reject oversized custom DataType definitions, preventing heap overflows. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to OPC UA servers/clients using vulnerable versions and monitor for suspicious activity.
