Description

A vulnerability was detected in 1999AZZAR designer-mcp up to 2.1.0. This affects the function get_reference of the file skills/motion-designer/references/motion-dev-guidelines.md of the component MCP Interface. The manipulation of the argument Name results in path traversal. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploit is now public and may be used. This product takes the approach of rolling releases to provide continious delivery. Therefore, version details for affected and updated releases are not available. The patch is identified as c8c2951dcbed9b1710a745993f028317f10a3f10. Applying a patch is advised to resolve this issue.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a path traversal issue (CWE-22) in the 1999AZZAR designer-mcp tool up to version 2.1.0. It occurs in the get_reference function where user-supplied input for the Name argument is directly concatenated into a file path without validation. Attackers can exploit this by using sequences like ../ to escape the intended directory and access arbitrary files on the system, including sensitive files outside the application's scope.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your system runs 1999AZZAR designer-mcp versions up to 2.1.0. Inspect logs for unusual file access patterns or path traversal attempts like '../' in requests to the get_reference function. Use commands like 'find / -name designer-mcp' to locate installations and 'grep -r get_reference' to check for vulnerable code paths.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files on the server filesystem. If exploited, sensitive files such as configuration files, internal documentation, or other restricted data could be accessed. The impact includes unauthorized information disclosure, potential data breaches, and compromise of system integrity depending on the accessed files.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized access to personal or sensitive health data. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. A successful exploit may result in data breaches, triggering legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage for organizations handling regulated data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update to the latest version of designer-mcp if available. If not, apply the patch from commit c8c2951dcbed9b1710a745993f028317f10a3f10. Restrict network access to the MCP interface to trusted sources only. Monitor file system access logs for suspicious activity targeting sensitive directories.
