Memory Exhaustion in Starlet Perl Decoder

Description

Starlet versions from 0.20 before 0.33 for Perl allow memory exhaustion via unbounded buffering when decoding chunked request bodies. The decoder adds each read to one buffer of unconsumed input. Nothing limits the length of a chunk-size line, so a line without a CRLF grows the buffer for as long as the client keeps sending, and the read timeout restarts after every read. The data of a large chunk is also held in the buffer until the whole chunk has arrived. A remote attacker can exhaust a worker's memory with a single request.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a memory exhaustion issue in Starlet versions 0.20 to 0.33 for Perl. It occurs when decoding chunked request bodies. The decoder adds each read to a buffer without limiting the chunk-size line length, allowing an attacker to send a single request that grows the buffer indefinitely. The server's memory is exhausted as the client keeps sending data, and the read timeout resets after each read.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows a remote attacker to crash or severely degrade the performance of a server by consuming all available memory with a single malicious request. This can lead to denial of service, making the service unavailable to legitimate users.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Starlet to version 0.33 or later to address the memory exhaustion issue in chunked request body decoding.
