Description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-58 and 7.x before 7.1.2-33 contains uncontrolled recursion in the MVG decoder that can lead to a stack overflow. Attackers can supply a crafted MVG file that, when read with specific arguments, exhausts the stack and crashes the process, causing a denial of service.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack overflow issue in ImageMagick caused by uncontrolled recursion in the MVG decoder. Attackers can craft a malicious MVG file that, when processed with specific arguments, exhausts the stack and crashes the application, leading to a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick using the command 'convert --version' or 'magick --version'. If the version is below 6.9.13-58 or 7.1.2-33, the system is vulnerable. Additionally, monitor for crashes when processing MVG files.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause your ImageMagick application to crash, disrupting services that rely on it. If exploited, it may lead to system downtime or require restarting the affected process.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service by crashing the ImageMagick process through stack exhaustion. While it does not directly expose or leak data, a denial of service could impact availability of systems processing images, potentially violating compliance requirements for data availability under standards like GDPR or HIPAA if critical systems are affected.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to version 6.9.13-58 or later for the 6.x branch, or 7.1.2-33 or later for the 7.x branch. Avoid processing untrusted MVG files until the update is applied.
