Description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-58 and 7.x before 7.1.2-33 contains an injection vulnerability in the MVG encoder, which does not properly neutralize user-specified drawing options before writing them into generated MVG output. Attackers who can supply drawing options can inject arbitrary MVG drawing commands into the resulting MVG file.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a code injection flaw in ImageMagick's MVG (Magick Vector Graphics) encoder. It occurs because the software fails to properly neutralize user-supplied drawing options before writing them into generated MVG output. Attackers who can provide malicious drawing options can inject arbitrary MVG drawing commands into the resulting file.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick using commands like 'convert --version' or 'magick --version'. If the version is below 6.9.13-58 or 7.1.2-33, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to execute arbitrary commands on a system running a vulnerable version of ImageMagick. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or further compromise of the affected system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling code injection through the MVG encoder. If exploited, it may allow unauthorized data access or modification, violating confidentiality requirements in both regulations. GDPR emphasizes data protection and breach notification, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. The flaw's ability to inject arbitrary commands could lead to unauthorized processing or exposure of sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to version 6.9.13-58 or later for the 6.x branch, or 7.1.2-33 or later for the 7.x branch. If updating is not possible, restrict access to ImageMagick commands and disable MVG file processing.
