Description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-58 and 7.x before 7.1.2-33 contains a memory leak in the JNG encoder that fails to release allocated memory when processing a crafted image. Attackers can supply crafted images that are encoded to JNG to leak memory, potentially causing resource exhaustion and a limited denial of service.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a memory leak in ImageMagick's JNG encoder. When processing a specially crafted image, the encoder fails to release allocated memory properly. Attackers can exploit this by supplying malicious JNG images to cause memory leaks, leading to resource exhaustion and a limited denial of service.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick using the command: identify -version or magick -version. If the version is below 6.9.13-58 or 7.1.2-33, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability may cause resource exhaustion on systems processing crafted JNG images. It can lead to degraded performance, crashes, or limited denial of service due to memory leaks. Systems using vulnerable ImageMagick versions are at risk if they handle untrusted images.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to version 6.9.13-58 or later for the 6.x branch, or 7.1.2-33 or later for the 7.x branch. If updating is not possible, disable the JNG encoder or restrict processing of JNG images until patched.
