Description

ImageMagick before 7.1.2-33 contains a heap buffer overflow vulnerability on 32-bit systems that allows attackers to overwrite heap memory when convex-hull information is requested. Attackers can supply crafted images processed with convex-hull calculations to corrupt heap memory, causing crashes or potential code execution.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

ImageMagick before version 7.1.2-33 has a heap buffer overflow vulnerability on 32-bit systems. When processing convex-hull calculations on crafted images, attackers can overwrite heap memory, causing crashes or potential code execution.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick on your system. Run: convert --version or identify --version. If the output shows a version before 7.1.2-33, the system is vulnerable. Additionally, monitor for crashes during image processing tasks involving convex-hull calculations.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause system crashes or allow attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected 32-bit systems running vulnerable ImageMagick versions. It requires local access and user interaction to exploit.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability has a low severity rating and primarily impacts system availability on 32-bit ImageMagick builds. It does not directly affect confidentiality or integrity of data, which are key concerns for GDPR and HIPAA. However, crashes or instability caused by the flaw could indirectly impact compliance by disrupting data processing or availability.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-33 or later. If updating is not possible, disable or restrict access to convex-hull processing features in ImageMagick. Avoid processing untrusted images until the update is applied.
