Description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-58 and 7.x before 7.1.2-33 contains a memory leak in its XML parsing code, where allocated memory is not released when parsing reaches the nesting depth limit. Attackers can supply crafted, deeply nested XML data to trigger the leak, causing memory exhaustion and denial of service.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a memory leak in ImageMagick's XML parsing code. When parsing deeply nested XML data, the software fails to release allocated memory after reaching the nesting depth limit. This causes memory exhaustion and can lead to a denial of service condition.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick on your system. Run the command 'convert --version' or 'magick --version' to see the version number. If the version is below 6.9.13-58 or 7.1.2-33, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can exploit this by sending crafted XML data with excessive nesting, causing ImageMagick to consume all available memory. This may crash the application or system, disrupting services that rely on ImageMagick for image processing.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes memory exhaustion through crafted XML data, leading to denial of service. It primarily impacts system availability rather than confidentiality or integrity of data. Compliance standards like GDPR or HIPAA focus on data protection and availability, so while this issue could disrupt services, it does not directly violate these regulations unless it leads to unauthorized data access or prolonged downtime affecting data processing.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to version 6.9.13-58 or later for the 6.x branch, or 7.1.2-33 or later for the 7.x branch. If updating is not possible, restrict access to ImageMagick's XML parsing functionality or disable it entirely to prevent exploitation.
