Description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-58 and 7.x before 7.1.2-33 contains a memory leak in the handling of XMP profiles by various decoders. Attackers can supply images with a crafted XMP profile that leak memory each time they are processed, leading to resource exhaustion and denial of service.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a memory leak in ImageMagick versions before 6.9.13-58 and 7.x before 7.1.2-33. Attackers can exploit it by providing images with a crafted XMP profile. Each time the image is processed, memory leaks, leading to resource exhaustion and potential denial of service.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick using the command: convert --version or identify --version. If the version is below 6.9.13-58 or 7.1.2-33, the system is vulnerable. Monitor system memory usage during image processing tasks for unusual leaks.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can degrade system performance due to memory exhaustion. It may cause denial of service by consuming all available memory when processing malicious images. No privileges or user interaction are required for exploitation.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to version 6.9.13-58 or 7.1.2-33 or later. If updating is not possible, restrict processing of untrusted images or disable affected decoders. Monitor system resources for abnormal memory consumption during image operations.
