Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a memory leak in ImageMagick's PerlMagick interface. It occurs when reading image properties in versions before 7.1.2-33. Five specific code locations fail to free memory after returning values, causing memory exhaustion if repeatedly triggered. This leads to denial of service by depleting system resources.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick using the command 'convert --version' or 'magick --version'. If the version is below 7.1.2-33, the system is vulnerable. Monitor memory usage for unexpected spikes during image processing tasks.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can cause denial of service by exhausting system memory. It requires local access and user interaction but no special privileges. Systems running affected ImageMagick versions may become unresponsive or crash due to memory depletion.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily causes denial of service through memory exhaustion, which may indirectly impact compliance by disrupting system availability. GDPR and HIPAA require maintaining data processing integrity and availability; prolonged outages could affect compliance. However, the vulnerability itself does not directly violate these standards as it does not involve unauthorized data access or disclosure.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-33 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, disable PerlMagick functionality or restrict access to image processing features until the update is applied.
