Description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-58 and 7.x before 7.1.2-33 contains a heap-based buffer overflow in the X11 animate operation when processing crafted images. Attackers can supply a malicious image that, when a user runs an X11 animate operation on it, overwrites heap memory and can crash the application.

Executive Summary

This is a heap-based buffer overflow in ImageMagick versions before 6.9.13-58 and 7.x before 7.1.2-33. It occurs during the X11 animate operation when processing specially crafted images. Attackers can overwrite heap memory, potentially crashing the application.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick using the command: identify -version or magick -version. If the version is below 6.9.13-58 or 7.1.2-33, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can crash the ImageMagick application when a user processes a malicious image using the X11 animate operation. It requires local access and user interaction but does not allow unauthorized data access or modification.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR or HIPAA as it primarily impacts application availability through crashes. It does not involve unauthorized data access, disclosure, or modification, which are key concerns for these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to version 6.9.13-58 or later for the 6.x branch, or 7.1.2-33 or later for the 7.x branch. Avoid using the X11 animate operation on untrusted images until patched.
