Description

Parse Server before 8.6.103 and 9.0.0 before 9.10.5-alpha.4 contains an information disclosure vulnerability in LiveQuery. Its subscription hash omits constraints next to a $or operator, including the _Session owner filter and beforeSubscribe constraints, so distinct subscriptions are grouped together. Authenticated clients subscribing with $or queries can receive other users' events, including session tokens usable for impersonation.

Executive Summary

Parse Server versions before 8.6.103 and 9.0.0 before 9.10.5-alpha.4 have an information disclosure vulnerability in LiveQuery. The subscription hash omits constraints next to a $or operator, including session owner filters and beforeSubscribe constraints. This causes distinct subscriptions to be grouped together, allowing authenticated clients using $or queries to receive events intended for other users, including session tokens usable for impersonation.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Parse Server version is within the affected range (8.0.0 to 8.6.102 or 9.0.0 to 9.10.5-alpha.3). Review LiveQuery subscriptions using $or queries for improper event isolation. Inspect subscription hashes to ensure they include all constraints, especially those adjacent to $or operators.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with valid credentials could exploit this to access other users' events and session tokens, enabling account impersonation. This could lead to unauthorized data access, privilege escalation, or further attacks within the application.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate data protection requirements under GDPR (e.g., unauthorized access to personal data) and HIPAA (e.g., exposure of protected health information). Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to data breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Parse Server to version 9.10.5-alpha.4 or 8.6.103 or later. As a temporary measure, avoid using $or queries in LiveQuery subscriptions and enforce ACL or class-level permissions for sensitive data. Disable LiveQuery for _Session subscriptions if possible.
