Description

SiYuan from 2.10.0 before 3.8.7 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows users with edit permission to inject script by placing javascript: URLs in math block content rendered with KaTeX trust enabled. Attackers can store \href, \url, or \includegraphics payloads that mathRender assigns via innerHTML, executing script in the application origin when a reader clicks the rendered link.

Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in SiYuan versions 2.10.0 to 3.8.6. Users with edit permissions can inject malicious JavaScript by inserting javascript: URLs in math block content rendered with KaTeX's trust mode enabled. The vulnerability occurs because SiYuan uses innerHTML to render math blocks without proper sanitization, allowing attackers to execute scripts when victims click rendered links.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with edit rights could inject malicious scripts that execute when other users view the affected math blocks. This may lead to session hijacking, unauthorized actions on behalf of the user, or theft of sensitive data. The impact depends on user privileges and the nature of the injected payload.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. Organizations using affected SiYuan versions may face compliance risks if user data is compromised through XSS exploitation.
