Description

vLLM from 0.18.0 before 0.31.0 contains a resource exhaustion vulnerability that allows API clients to bypass the video/jpeg frame-count cap by overriding num_frames through media_io_kwargs. Attackers can set num_frames to -1 with a large inline video so VideoMediaIO.load_base64 decodes every frame, exhausting memory and crashing the API frontend.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects vLLM versions 0.18.0 to 0.30.9. Attackers can bypass the video frame-count limit by setting num_frames to -1 via media_io_kwargs. This causes the VideoMediaIO.load_base64 function to decode every frame of a large video, consuming excessive memory and crashing the API frontend.

Detection Guidance

Monitor API frontend memory usage and logs for crashes or OOM-kill events during video processing requests. Check for requests with num_frames set to -1 or unusually large video payloads in media_io_kwargs.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to denial-of-service by exhausting system memory and CPU resources. It may crash the API frontend or cause the serving process to be OOM-killed, disrupting services relying on vLLM for video-capable multimodal models.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to denial-of-service conditions by exhausting system resources, which may disrupt availability of services handling sensitive data. For GDPR, this could impact the right to access or availability of services. For HIPAA, it may affect the availability of electronic protected health information systems.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade vLLM to version 0.31.0 or later to apply the fix. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict video processing capabilities or disable media_io_kwargs overrides in API configurations.
