Executive Summary

phpMyFAQ before version 4.1.10 has a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in its PDF export feature. This flaw allows attackers who can modify FAQ content to embed image URLs pointing to internal or loopback services. When a PDF is generated, the server fetches these external images and includes their responses in the PDF.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for unusual outbound requests from your phpMyFAQ server, particularly those targeting internal or loopback addresses. Monitor network traffic for PDF export processes fetching external images. Review server logs for requests to 127.0.0.1, localhost, or internal IP ranges during PDF generation.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to force the server to access internal services, potentially exposing sensitive data or internal network information. This could lead to unauthorized access to internal resources or denial of service if the server processes many malicious requests.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches by exposing internal data through PDF exports, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's confidentiality requirements. Organizations may face compliance violations if sensitive data is inadvertently shared.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade phpMyFAQ to version 4.1.10 or later immediately. Disable the PDF export feature if not required. Restrict network access to the phpMyFAQ server to prevent unauthorized access. Review and sanitize all FAQ content to remove any embedded image URLs pointing to internal or loopback addresses.
