Description

Rclone before 1.75.2 contains a path traversal vulnerability in serve webdav that allows unauthenticated attackers to write above the served root by sending an unvalidated '..' path component. Attackers can send MKCOL /.. to plant a VFS node, then PUT, MOVE, COPY, or MKCOL to create, overwrite, or delete files belonging to other tenants.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-116191 is a path traversal vulnerability in Rclone versions before 1.75.2 affecting the serve webdav feature. It allows unauthenticated attackers to write files outside the intended root directory by exploiting unvalidated '..' path components in MKCOL requests. Attackers can plant a VFS node and then use PUT, MOVE, COPY, or MKCOL to create, overwrite, or delete files belonging to other tenants.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your rclone version is below 1.75.2. Run 'rclone version' to verify. Inspect webdav serve logs for suspicious MKCOL requests with '..' path components. Monitor for unauthorized file writes outside the intended root directory.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow attackers to create, overwrite, or delete files outside the intended directory structure without authentication. In multi-tenant deployments, it enables attackers to manipulate files belonging to other tenants or administrative files, posing significant integrity and availability risks. Confidentiality is not compromised due to existing filters blocking reads outside the served root.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade rclone to version 1.75.2 or later immediately. Disable the webdav serve feature if not required. If webdav is necessary, restrict access via network policies and enable authentication. Review file system permissions for unauthorized changes.
