Description

rclone from 1.37 before 1.74.2 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to redirect http and netstorage backend requests by supplying a double-slash root on an existing named remote via --rc-serve. Attackers can make HEAD/GET requests to attacker-chosen hosts to read responses, capture configured custom headers, or obtain valid NetStorage request signatures.

Executive Summary

This is a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in rclone versions 1.37 to 1.74.1. It occurs when the --rc-serve flag is used without authentication. Attackers can supply a double-slash root on an existing named remote to redirect HTTP and NetStorage backend requests to arbitrary hosts. This allows them to perform HEAD or GET requests to chosen destinations, read responses, capture custom headers, or obtain valid NetStorage request signatures.

Detection Guidance

Check if rclone is running with the --rc-serve flag by inspecting process commands. Look for versions between 1.37 and 1.74.1. Monitor network traffic for unexpected HTTP/NetStorage requests to external hosts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to access internal systems, steal sensitive data like headers or request signatures, or make unauthorized requests on behalf of the server. This may lead to data breaches, unauthorized access to resources, or further network compromise depending on the server's configuration and network environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or disclosure, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations using vulnerable rclone versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to potential data breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade rclone to version 1.74.2 or later immediately. Disable the --rc-serve flag if not required. Ensure --rc-serve deployments require authentication. Review and restrict remote configurations to prevent unauthorized access.
