Description

Rclone before 1.75.2 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the local backend's translateLink function, which trims the .rclonelink suffix from a path after the containment check, so a name can resolve outside the destination root. Attackers can plant a directory named ...rclonelink in a source tree synced with --links and --metadata to change ownership, timestamps, and xattrs of the destination's parent directory.

CWE ID Description
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-116195 is a path traversal vulnerability in Rclone versions before 1.75.2. It occurs in the local backend's translateLink function, which incorrectly trims the .rclonelink suffix from a path after performing a containment check. This allows attackers to manipulate paths to escape the intended destination root directory.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your rclone version is below 1.75.2. Run 'rclone version' to verify. Inspect synced directories for directories named '...rclonelink' in source trees using '--links' and '--metadata' flags. Monitor for unexpected changes in ownership, timestamps, or xattrs in parent directories.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can exploit this by creating a directory named ...rclonelink in a source tree synced with --links and --metadata flags. This allows unauthorized changes to ownership, timestamps, and extended attributes of the destination's parent directory. If Rclone runs as root, attackers may gain control over unintended directories.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade rclone to version 1.75.2 or later immediately. Avoid using '--links' and '--metadata' flags until patched. If already exploited, review synced directories for '...rclonelink' and revert unauthorized changes to ownership, timestamps, or xattrs.
