Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an arbitrary file read issue in Webasyst Framework through version 4.4.0. It occurs in the waArchiveTar::writeItem() function where symlinks are created from theme archives without validating the link targets. Authenticated users with theme management rights can upload malicious theme archives containing symlinks pointing to sensitive files like wa-config/db.php or /etc/passwd. These files can then be accessed through the public theme path, leading to unauthorized information disclosure.

Detection Guidance

Check for suspicious theme uploads or tar archives containing symlinks. Inspect waArchiveTar::writeItem() and waTheme.class.php for unusual file access patterns. Monitor public theme paths for unauthorized file reads like /etc/passwd or wa-config/db.php.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with theme management privileges could exploit this to read sensitive files such as database configurations, system files like /etc/passwd, or private keys. This could lead to unauthorized access, data leaks, or further compromise of the system depending on the exposed files.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, potentially violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Webasyst Framework to a version beyond 4.4.0. Disable theme uploads for non-admin users. Implement strict validation for symlink targets in tar archives. Review and remove any existing malicious theme archives.
