Description

The SEOPress – AI SEO Plugin & On-site SEO plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'display_name' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 10.3 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is exploitable by any Subscriber who sets their display_name to a string containing the literal %%archive_title%% token alongside HTML event-handler payloads, as WordPress stores display names without HTML filtering and the plugin substitutes the token after escaping has already occurred.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the SEOPress AI SEO Plugin for WordPress. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access to inject malicious scripts via the 'display_name' parameter. The issue occurs because the plugin does not properly sanitize input or escape output, enabling script execution when users access affected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress user accounts for display names containing the literal %%archive_title%% token combined with HTML event-handler payloads. Inspect plugin files for versions up to 10.3 in the SEOPress directory.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to steal user sessions, perform actions on behalf of users, or deface websites. Users with subscriber access or higher could inject scripts that run in the context of other users' browsers, potentially leading to data theft or unauthorized actions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Exploitation may result in data breaches, triggering compliance obligations such as breach notifications and potential fines.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the SEOPress plugin to the latest version beyond 10.3. Remove any suspicious display names containing %%archive_title%% and HTML event-handler payloads from user accounts.
