Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Netty's netty-tcnative before 2.0.84.Final allows remote TLS 1.3 peers to cause a denial of service by exploiting an overreporting issue in the tcn_write_to_bytebuffer BIO write callback. This can lead to truncation of queued post-handshake records like NewSessionTicket or KeyUpdate, causing connection failures or JVM process abortion.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can impact you by causing unexpected disruptions in network services using Netty with TLS 1.3. It may lead to connection failures, truncated data transfers, or even complete service outages, requiring manual intervention to restore normal operations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR or HIPAA by causing service disruptions that lead to data processing interruptions or breaches. Downtime or data loss may result in violations of availability or integrity requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade netty-tcnative to version 2.0.84.Final or later to address the denial of service vulnerability in the tcn_write_to_bytebuffer BIO write callback.
