Seroval JavaScript Deserialization Denial of Service

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-116581, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

Seroval facilitates JavaScript value stringification, including complex structures beyond JSON.stringify capabilities. Prior to 1.6.8, fromJSON and fromCrossJSON do not validate a sequence node's done index. A crafted done index can create an iterator that never finishes when application code consumes it to completion. An unauthenticated request to a service that deserializes untrusted input can therefore block the event loop, exhaust process memory, or make the service unavailable. This issue is fixed in version 1.6.8.

Executive Summary

Seroval is a JavaScript library for stringifying complex data structures. Versions before 1.6.8 have a flaw in the fromJSON and fromCrossJSON functions where a crafted 'done' index can create an infinite iterator. This causes the event loop to block, potentially exhausting memory or making the service unavailable.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves improper handling of a crafted done index in Seroval's fromJSON and fromCrossJSON functions, leading to event loop blocking or memory exhaustion. Detection requires checking the installed version of Seroval. Run: npm list seroval or grep seroval package.json to verify if the version is below 1.6.8.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could send malicious input to a service using Seroval. This could block the event loop, consume excessive memory, or crash the service, leading to denial of service. Systems processing untrusted data are most at risk.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Seroval to version 1.6.8 or later. Use: npm update seroval or specify the fixed version in package.json. Restart services using Seroval after updating. Monitor for unusual memory usage or event loop delays.
